Mayor of Hardware: Opening Drawers Without Handles

By Richie DeMarco | 02/03/2012 8:57:00 AM

I am beginning to see more and more designs that have a contemporary feel to them. Of course people are still using raised panel drawer fronts and crown moulding, but I am also seeing white gloss fronts with chocolate cabinetry. Some customers are ready for a change and high gloss drawer fronts seem to fit the bill.

Most of my customers don’t want to use decorative hardware with high gloss fronts. Which creates the problem, how do I open the drawer? The easiest solution is to use a “push open” slide.

The “push open” slide looks and installs like your standard ball bearing slide, which makes it an easy upgrade to offer. Once “pushed” the drawer will open up about 50% allowing access to the inside of the drawer. These slides due require a ¼” gap between the face and the vertical to allow the “push” mechanism to work. I have seen designs that add an oversized top shelf and additional vertical panels, creating the appearance of an inset cabinet. This will totally change the look of your stack of drawers…

There are many different brands on the market. Your local supplier should be able to give you more info, if not please feel free contact me at richdemarco@optonline.net.
